Kirtland Temple
Kirtland, Ohio 1833-36
Joseph Smith, Jr. and his followers built this church in the early days of the Latter Day Saints movement. When built, it was one of the largest buildings in Ohio. It has distinctive pews and pulpits; the pews can be shifted to face pulpits at either end of the sanctuary. Community pressure forced the group to abandon the Temple and move westward a few months after the building was completed. In 1880 the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints acquired the building, and they continue to maintain it. Today the Temple is part of a complex of religious and historic buildings relating to LDS history in Kirtland. It is a pilgrimage site for LDS members world wide, and services for visiting groups are held throughout the year.
