Tallmadge Congregational Church
Now, Historic Tallmadge Church
Tallmadge, Ohio 1822-25

David Bacon established Tallmadge in 1807 as a Congregational community. In 1821 local landowners donated timber to build the church, designed and constructed by one of Ohio's first architects, Lemuel Porter. The structure is considered to be an excellent example of New England style Federal architecture. The steeple is 100 feet high. The church was featured on the cover of Life Magazine in 1944, as an example of enduring American values. It is located on the town green of Tallmadge, now an Akron suburb and the center of a busy traffic circle. The Ohio Historical Society has charge of the building, which is used for weddings and other special events as well as worship services.
